i tend to see it after crashes.
perhaps some variant overlays that depend on the cause of death, like a slightly charred one for fire-related deaths.
wooden command block tools could possibly give slightly more xp from slain monsters and mined ores. that's a possibility.

plus, even if the end was above and the nether was below, the storm can't suck up bedrock and the end is probably out of its range of suction.
this could also happen when the portal is sucked up with a block cluster which sometimes happens.
those mods are actually made with fresh animations in mind.
