This sounds like an issue of the driver not being able to keep up. Is your CPU old by any chance? Is anything else on your computer hogging resources?
This issue started occurring after mesa 20.2, [here](https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/issues/3514)'s the issue on the mesa bugtracker.
