On an Apple M2 Max. I've dug around, seems like by-passing `sanitize` call in xml.control_xml_output fixes the issue locally.

Faced the same issue and investigated my `pyproject.toml` anytime you have ``` variable=[ .... ] ``` I change to (note the 4 spaces) ``` variable=[ .... ] ``` PTW works...
