Alternatively, only the selected window uses the non-overlay version. The non-selected windows use overlays. Maybe also try and make use of atomic windows
For some reason hl mode gets disabled when using the non-overlay option

Thought I'd put this here in case someone else comes across it, but I noticed that if you're using evil, `evil-escape-key-sequence` will seriously mess with input for example for me...
