This is something I have missed too. Especially when editing a series of images of one subject but switching between landscape and portrait format.
You can use the LUA script EnfuseAdvanced to focus stack.
Why not just sort by kind in Finder?
I have also noticed this, in 4.6.0 on both Mac and Linux. I meant to file a bug report but haven't got around to it yet, and now I saw...
You can scroll the mouse wheel to affect more or less of the graph.
