Did the orignal idea of "adding a page template to creat unique layouts" actually get any further? I would really like to find out if it did or not.

+1 for that suggestion @davidsherlock - excellent idea. Its much easier for those who use the BB Theme and BB to customize it, so something as simple as a customizer...
