For those running into this issue and have minimum SDK 24, the fix is to simply do this, which is what we ended up doing, no need for this library:...

Could not get unknown property 'release' for SigningConfig container.

Just put the "signingConfigs" block on top of "buildTypes" block in your build.gradle.
