MODIS land cover for urban areas does a good job capturing the physical footprint of urban areas (i.e., big buildings), but not suburbs (where GRUMP shines).
GRUMP urban extents provide a very conservative estimate of urban areas (inc. suburbs), and are generally best to understand maximum impact areas.
Use the EarthStat database to disentangle land by crop type: http://www.earthstat.org/ Should be able to get fruit, wheat, etc. Lots of nuance. Overall cropland area should also be feasible.
