The issue was resolved by closing and reopening Hexchat.

I am reopening this issue because I still don't understand why this issue happened, and I'm pretty sure the bug is not in Freenode. At the very least it seems...

Feature request: different SMTP for each identity

This really is an important but overlooked e-mail client feature, to be able to receive from multiple e-mail accounts and reply as those e-mail accounts through the correct SMTP server...
