while I can only recommend prepared queries, the portability argument of PDO is moot: PDO can handle multiple database systems, but that's about it, it doesn't cover the syntax differences...
The rendering engine draws every frame even if no flush commands are sent. So changing the clear color in that case should still take effect.

edgemarking is exacerbating the issue. heh but, at 1x it uses the original (non-hires) polygon coords, so I'd have to understand how shit works and why it's not lining up...
