Hartmut Grosser:

Versions: XNote = 2.3.1 Thunderbird = 68.4.1 (both on Windows and Ubuntu) OS = Windows 7 (32-bit) and Linux Ubuntu 18.04 (64-bit)

  1. Select in Thunderbird a mail, where a XNote has been added, so that this XNote is displayed. Exit Thunderbird via the "X" in it's upper right corner or via keys ALT+F4. Result: after Thunderbird has exited, the XNote-Dialog is still displayed on the desktop (see attached screenshot1.png). OS: this bug occurs only on Ubuntu, not on Windows. Screenshot illustrating the problem: https://bugs.froihofer.net/bugzilla/attachment.cgi?id=5

  2. Select in Thunderbird a mail, where a XNote has been added, so that this XNote is displayed. Exit Thunderbird via Menu File / Exit or via keys STRG+Q (STRG+Q is only available on Ubuntu). Result: the error does NOT occur (the XNote-Dialog is closed, before Thunderbird exits). OS: same behaviour on Ubuntu and Windows.

  3. Select in Thunderbird a mail, where a XNote has been added, so that this XNote is displayed. Now start Thunderbird-menu Help / Troubleshooting Information. Result: the XNote-Dialog is still displayed over the Troubleshooting Informations (see attached screenshot2.png). OS: this bug occurs on Ubuntu AND on Windows. Screenshot illustrating the problem: https://bugs.froihofer.net/bugzilla/attachment.cgi?id=6

As requested, I repeated my tests with a new Thunderbird profile. The results were the same.

Points 1. and 2. above relate to this ticket. Point 3 is #7 that will be fixed with the update for TB78.

is this still happening? We now close notes when tabs are switched, that might also help when TB is closed

I can confirm this (note stays after closing by x) on 78.6.0 on Kali (Debian).

I have a bit strange Linux setup: Android, using userland to install Kali, but in general, TB works there, so this bug is still valid.

I can confirm now, that this bug still exists with XNote++ 3.1.7 on Thunderbird 78.11.0 (64-bit) on Linux (Ubuntu 18.04 64-bit).

This bug happens (see conditions above) e.g. if you exit Thunderbird via mouse on "X" in it's upper right corner or via keys CTRL-W (or Menu File / Close) or via ALT+F4. But this bug does NOT happen when you exit TB via keys CTRL-Q (or Menu File / Quit).

But for me personal the bug via mouse on "X" in the upper right corner is the most disturbing.

  1. I think this is actually a TB 'feature'. If you open error console, for example, and close TB by x, error console persists. Only by file-> exit do all (sub-) windows go away.

  2. I will check whether there is a notification for 'closing down'. If I can find that, I can then close the note by program, just as we do when moving to a message without a note.

Thanks for that information.

I found out, that when you minimize Thunderbird via it's Icon "v" or "-" in it's upper right corner, that than the yellow XNote dialog ist always closed automatically. This gives me hope that there is a mechanism for "minimizing", which you possibly could copy/adapt for "closing" Thunderbird via the "X" in it's upper right corner.
