wasmer is not available on aarch64?

Describe the bug

I'm trying to run wasmer + wasmer-py on a RPi 3b+, running Ubuntu 20.04 (aarch64). I tried wasmer_compiler_llvm and wasmer_compiler_cranelift as backends, both of which throw the same error. Also, wasmer itself can be installed, but is not working from python.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Clone this repo and go into this folder: https://github.com/proohit/nodejs-rust/tree/master/smartcore-wasi/python
  2. Install dependencies pip install -r requirements.txt
  3. Run python run-wasmer.py
  4. See error

Expected behavior

I was expecting it to run, since aarch64 seems to be supported, according to the readme.

Hello,

Referring to Supported Platforms Section, the aarch64 platform is supported. I know however that the wheels for aarch64 aren't published on pypi (because pypi only accepts amd64 wheels). Which lead me the following question: How did you install the wheels?

Note: The wheels are downloaded from the Github Releases assets, e.g. https://github.com/wasmerio/wasmer-python/releases/tag/1.0.0, see the wasmer-1.0.0-cp39-cp39-manylinux2010_aarch64.whl wheel for example.

Yep, I was referring to the same table, that's why I assumed that this should work. I installed it with pip as dependencies. This is my requirements.txt:

wasmer==1.0.0
wasmer_compiler_cranelift==1.0.0
...

Where the wheels come from? pip will fetch the wheels from somewhere, where is it :-)?

Hmm, it seems like pip doesn't install wasmer-1.0.0-cp39-cp39-manylinux2010_aarch64.whl at all from pip. Instead, it falls back to wasmer-1.0.0-py3-none-any.whl. The source seems to be https://pypi.org/simple/wasmer/ and there are no links for aarch64 which explains the fallback.

If I have forgotten anything, please have a look at the installation logs below.

pypi.org does not accept wheels from aarch64. It only supports amd64 as far as I know. That's why we didn't publish them on pypi.org, but on Github Releases instead.

We did consider to publish wasmer-python on https://www.piwheels.org/, but as the homepage says:

currently only the 32-bit OS is supported, not 64-bit.

And we generate wheels for ARM 64bits. Consequently, we can't use piwheels.org neither.

I believe you need to download the wheels manually from the release page, https://github.com/wasmerio/wasmer-python/releases/tag/1.0.0.

Yes, that sounds plausible.. I take it, I need to install it with pip install wasmer-1.0.0-cp39-cp39-manylinux2010_aarch64.whl after downloading.

I think a note on this somewhere in the docs would be helpful, since arm i.e. aarch64 is a popular target for edge applications :).

After trying to install the wheel manually, I got the following error:

$ pip install wasmer-1.0.0-cp39-cp39-manylinux2010_aarch64.whl
ERROR: wasmer-1.0.0-cp39-cp39-manylinux2010_aarch64.whl is not a supported wheel on this platform.
$ pip install wasmer-1.0.0-cp38-cp38-manylinux2010_aarch64.whl
ERROR: wasmer-1.0.0-cp38-cp38-manylinux2010_aarch64.whl is not a supported wheel on this platform.
$ pip install wasmer-1.0.0-cp37-cp37m-manylinux2010_aarch64.whl
ERROR: wasmer-1.0.0-cp37-cp37m-manylinux2010_aarch64.whl is not a supported wheel on this platform.
$ pip install wasmer-1.0.0-cp36-cp36m-manylinux2010_aarch64.whl
ERROR: wasmer-1.0.0-cp36-cp36m-manylinux2010_aarch64.whl is not a supported wheel on this platform.

Hi, uname -a is in my initial issue description under Additional Context. For reference:

So yeah, you should use wasmer-1.0.0-cp38-cp38-manylinux2010_aarch64.whl for what I can see. I will investigate.

@Hywan pypi definitely supports aarch64 wheels, several other popular packages publish them (grpc, numpy, etc)

aarch64 is only supported in manylinux2014 and later, manylinux2010 only has x86_64 and i686 support.
