Autofit guest doesn't work in an Arch Linux VM with GNOME 43 (Wayland).

Describe the bug

I cannot seem to get "Autofit guest" working in an Arch Linux VM with GNOME 43 (Wayland).

open-vm-tools version is 12.1.5-1, kernel is 6.1.1.

Afaik, everything is installed & running correctly. I've also tried with the option enable=true under [resolutionKMS] in /etc/vmware-tools/tools.conf.

This is with VMware Workstation 17 Pro under Windows 11 as host.

Reproduction steps

  1. Install Arch Linux as guest & open-vm-tools.
  2. ...
  3. Profit.

Expected behavior

Autoresize works in the guest.

There are known issues with Wayland support. Please try using the "Gnome on Xorg" option. See: https://github.com/vmware/open-vm-tools/issues/592

I am running into the same issue with sway and Wayland on Arch. My current workaround is to exit the sway session. Then change the VMware window to the desired size. Finally, start a new sway session.

It seems VMware applies the current custom window size, but only on the initial start of a sway session. Until now I could not find a way to re-trigger this in a running sway session.
