orphan files after resize

So I want to limit the size of the images that a client uploads. I modified the config.php. Only change I made was as follows:

'image_resizing' => true, 'image_resizing_width' => 1000,

When I then try and upload an image it gets resized to 1000 width but it leaves an additional file in the file system. Can anyone explain why? Or how to ensure it gets cleaned up. I assume it's part of the resize process.
