[Feature Request] Show only text on device with no text-to-speech?

Is it possible have the device (eg: Echo Show) to only show a message on the screen but not use text-to-speech? So like an announcement, which shows the text, but without the audio part.

The Announce command, which shows and speaks the text, has a volume option, but even when setting the volume to zero, the echo will automatically raise the volume to about 3 before speaking.

Are there plans to add support for Echo Show devices? There is an Alexa Presentation Language that can be used to display text, images, slideshows, and even video to Show devices. Just text and images would be fine. https://developer.amazon.com/en-US/docs/alexa/alexa-design/apl.html

Being able to show images and text would open up so many new features:

  • show messages/alerts that don't interrupt meetings/tv-watching
  • show image from camera?
  • show a list of upcoming events or todo list
  • emojii
