editing .tmux/resurrect/last has no effect

I thought it would be easier to edit .tmux/resurrect/last manually today and remove a few tabs and tweak shells, etc.

Imagine my surprise to find that on re-running tmux, the old session appears instead!

This happens regardless of whether tmux is running when I edit last.

This happens regardless of whether I delete all other files in the .tmux/resurrect folder except last (and the file it links to).

This happens regardless of whether I run tmux in byobu or in a standard xfce4-terminal

Anyone have ideas on where the "secret ressurect shadow file" might be located???
