Hello, thanks for your great work. You have asked for ideas. I have fond memories of the little cat following my mouse: oneko.

It was a bsd package https://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/pkgsrc/current/pkgsrc/x11/oneko/index.html you can find many illustrations by googling "oneko cat x11".
