- study by MIT: gave students different tasks to do, reward them with money according to their performance: Good performance -> more money
- as long as task only mechanical, no-brain-activity: more money led to more performance
- cognitive tasks: more money led to LESS performance
- other studies show: people above a certain level of skill work different then those below
- no "if this then that"-logic
- "pay people enough so they think about work, not money. Then give them responsibility and autonomy to get best results"
- "you problably want to do something interesting, so let me get out of your way" should be the way management works
- main motivations for open source contributors: challenge, mastery, making a contribution
- => organizations need a purpose to get the good guys => see mission statements of companies
