Standard Notes for Android crashes each time I type over 512 characters

Open philippetla opened this issue 5 years ago • 21 comments

Describe the bug For the last few weeks, the app has crashed whenever I write over 512 characters (I believe it's 512) in a note. I have 548 notes in total. I must then reopen the app and resume writing, and it doesn't crash the second time.

Smartphone (please complete the following information):

  • Device: Redmi Note 4
  • OS: Android 7.0 NRD90M | MIUI Global 11.0.2.0
  • App Version 3.5.12 (3000257)

Hi @philippetla,

Thank you so much for the report and providing the details of your device and OS! I'm afraid that I wasn't able to reproduce the issue on a note with 100,000 characters. What editor are you using with the note, if it isn't the Plain Editor?

JaspalSuri avatar Dec 22 '20 10:12 JaspalSuri

Hi Jaspal,

I'm using the plain editor. I had this problem this morning somewhere between 9:10 AM and 9:14 AM GMT+1 and sent the bug report after the crash. [Redacted]

Best regards, Philippe

Hi Philip,

Thanks so much for those details! I'm afraid that were weren't able to determine the cause of the crash from the errors messages that were sent to us.

We'll reach out to you if we have any more questions or when a potential fix is available!

I am also getting a repeated crash on iOS when typing continuously for about 15 minutes. Fortunately no data is lost. It just crashes and asks for a login when reopening.

In terms of reproduction, it's difficult because in both cases the app had been open in the background for over a day. The common thread in both examples was a long period of continuous typing, almost as if some memory threshold had been exceeded or some such. It has not happened in other cases like just switching to it in the background and updating note with short text.

My phone is iOS 14.3 on iPhone11 pro.

edit: I just counted the characters and it was about 1096 when it crashed.

Hi @ktleary,

I'm sorry to hear that. Thank you for providing all of that info. I'm glad to hear that no data was lost after the app crashed.

I tried typing continuously on an iPad and iPhone for 15 minutes each and wrote around 1033 and 763 words in each note respectively, but couldn't get the app to crash.

JaspalSuri avatar Jan 07 '21 13:01 JaspalSuri

impressive and inspiring effort ... so I tried again and typed for 10-15 minutes and was just about to give up when it crashed. This time char count was 3222 so that might be a red herring.

as long as no data is lost, I consider this a minor annoyance but I will be happy to provide some additional information or open a new issue if it helps.

I'm equally impressed (not at the app crashing 😅)! Thanks for the kind words and for trying that again.

I appreciate the understanding, but it still shouldn't happen. 🙂 What editor are you editing the notes in? Is it the Plain Editor or something else?

JaspalSuri avatar Jan 07 '21 15:01 JaspalSuri

it's the plain editor, dark theme.

I took a look in the analytics logs and found an event that seems to roughly corresponds with my original report, but it may be noise. Also, after looking through recent source code, I just opted out of bugsnag.

Thanks for your time.

Hello again @ktleary,

Thank you so much for that info! I've passed it along to our mobile dev. We plan to make Bugsnag opt-in across our apps in the future. We appreciate your time and feedback as well.

Please sign into the web app to confirm that everything on your notes syncing account that was written on your iOS device was saved properly.

Once you've verified that everything is there, please open the Settings app, and navigate to your iCloud backups with the following path:

[Your name and iCloud account (at the top)] → iCloud → Manage Storage → Backups → [Tap on the correct device], wait for the list to load, and then tap on "Load all/more apps" if necessary and wait for the list to expand once more. Finally, locate the Standard Notes app and toggle off the setting to have it backed up to iCloud.

From there, please reinstall the app, sign in again, and let us know if you still experience any crashes.

@ktleary & @philippetla, are you using a 3rd-party keyboard app by any chance?

JaspalSuri avatar Feb 04 '21 09:02 JaspalSuri

not I

ghost avatar Feb 04 '21 09:02 ghost

Hi, yes, Microsoft SwiftKey 7.7.1.8.

philippetla avatar Feb 04 '21 11:02 philippetla

Thank you both, @philippetla & @ktleary! I'll continue testing this on my end.

This issue looks to me the same as https://github.com/standardnotes/mobile/issues/360

I believe it is the same problem. Currently on a new Realme Android 10 phone.

philippetla avatar Mar 25 '21 11:03 philippetla

@philippetla Are you still experiencing crashes with version 3.6.3 of the Android app? If so, is it in the same way as you originally reported (typing a note over 512 characters) or something else?

JaspalSuri avatar Mar 25 '21 16:03 JaspalSuri

I still have the crash nearly each time I use the app, with V3.6.3 on Android 10, but the 512 characters limit doesn't seem to be a correct hypothesis. This morning it crashed after 317 characters.

Hi @philippetla,

Sorry for the delayed response. Thank you for letting us know that the app is still crashing on your device. Around how many notes & tags are stored on your device? This information is available in the left sidebar of the Android app and in the Account menu of the web and desktop apps.

One thing that might help, if you have an account, is to clear the app's storage (without reinstalling it), relaunch it, and sign in again to see if that resolves some of the crashing. You may want to sign into the web app first to confirm that everything on the Android app has been synced to your account. Additionally, you can export a set of backups from the Android app as well.

@ktleary, you can reset the iOS app as well if you'd like. Please look under the iOS section of this support article for more detailed instructions, but please export a set of backups and/or verify that all of the changes made on the iOS app have been synced to the web app first.

Thanks for continuing to look at this. My app still crashes but no data is ever lost so I live with it as a low priority issue that happens about 3 times a week.

With regard to resetting, the instructions say to remove from iCloud, but I am not using iCloud. If there is a fallback, maybe you might want to add that to docs. As mentioned, no need to follow-up on my account.

ghost avatar Apr 05 '21 17:04 ghost

Hi Jaspal, it's 641 notes.

philippetla avatar Apr 05 '21 17:04 philippetla

Hi @ktleary, thank you for those details! I'm glad that no data is lost and that at the very least it doesn't happen too frequently (not that it's ok by us, of course). If you're not using iCloud to backup your iPhone then it should install a fresh copy of the app whenever it is reinstalled. As long as you're using an account with us, recall your password, and can verify that changes have been synced over by signing into the web app, then it should be safe to reinstall as an attempt to reduce the amount of crashes you're experiencing. 🙂

Hi @philippetla, thank you for letting me know. That's not too many notes, so I'm not sure why it's crashing. We'll continue investigating and I'll let you know when another type of fix has been found and applied.
