Everyone who put an email in App.co or /mining needs to be on whatever list they should be on to receive an email about app mining winners.

Seems pretty bad that we aren't sending these emails it is probably the most important thing we can do to re-activate potential app miners. cc @pstan26 @GinaAbrams

We have to consider that these folks are not opting in to receive repeated emails from us. They are downloading a kit and we say nothing of a subscription. Not only would it violate CAN-SPAM and GDPR to start sending them emails regularly, we're Blockstack and need to be above reproach on these things. The regular app.co email list, for folks that KNOW what they are getting into, receive a regular newsletter that features the winners.

If you want to send regular email to the folks that sign up for the kit, the site needs to indicate that it's an ongoing subscription before they hit enter. I do worry that folks won't like that, but it's worth trying out.

On another note, these folks do get engaged with A LOT after the kit, the difference it's automated individual followups (vs. a regular marketing email) from myself, Gina, and Xan so that we're not breaking rules.

I think we should consider the opposite approach: Just allowing them to get the regular communication with the winners listed. Seeing other apps succeed is probably a superior way to motivate them opposed to us emailing them manually.

Perhaps the "starter kit" prompt could have a checkbox in addition to the email address input that says "I want to receive monthly App Mining winners in my inbox" and is perhaps enabled by default?

Marks approach would be best, the followup flow that is actually mostly automated is working very well to get people on calls which per @pstan26 is what we want to optimize for. The follow ups include a reference to winners anyway

@markmhx we talked about this in the Growth meeting today. Let's go with the checkbox - I'll note when we deploy it to see if has a negative impact on people being willing to enter their email. I think it can say 'I also want to get updates related to App Mining' to encourage it - this way we can add them to the marketing list too without worrying about being sketchy.

@cuevasm Sounds good. This is in the backlog now so I'll plan on prioritizing it during the next 2-week sprint. If you need this more urgently, please let me know.

TODOs for me:

  • Add a checkbox to the 'get starter kit' modal to opt-in to regular updates from app mining
  • 'Subscribe for updates' modal in app mining is implicit consent.
  • Pass a merge field to Mailigen if they've opted in.

Jeff and Mitchell to discuss us having two separate lists in a general sense.

@hstove can you tackle this issue during the sprint starting today?

@hstove This issue seems to have lingered here since February. Let's get this resolved within the next couple of weeks or move back to the icebox. Sound good?
