Where's the output?

I really appreciate the simplicity of the sample application but am not sure it's working like I expect. The Tomcat log shows that the application is deployed but if I do:

curl http://localhost/sample

I get no output whatsoever. This doesn't seem right. I expected a Hello message but there's nothing. Can anyone advise?
