segmentation fault when launching rviz on virtual machine image provided

steps to reproduce error:

    roscore
    rosrun rviz rviz

rviz does not start and crashes with segmentation fault error

Solution:

    Switch off your VM
    Just go to the VM Settings -> Display -> Uncheck Enable 3D Acceleration.
    Start your VM again.
