Commenting out this section in the root pom allows me to proceed:

This project is deployed to maven central. One requirement for that is to sign the artifacts with gpg. This needs to be documented better and maybe there is a way to get around it for local builds.

I think I likely need to pull from the archetype for this to work. I was pulling directly from this repo. Ill double check that.

I did not have this issue with the Archetype, will leave this open as you noted there was an enhancement that could be made.
