How to automatically set display layout when automatically setting app layout
The app layout feature is great.
But to actually deliver the desired end experience, it really needs to be able to control the display layout too, including:
- which display is to the left, right, middle....
- which has the Dock
- other Dock settings, including autohide, size, and preferred edge to display
All these things change seemingly randomly as I cycle between:
- two external displays plus my laptop in clamshell mode at work
- one external display, my laptop open, and a Universal Access link to a second laptop in my home office
- my laptop alone when working in the backyard
So I end up having to manually re-arrange heaps of things anyway in the manner that 'app layout' is trying to avoid.
If you can point me to a reliable freeware tool to use in conjunction with Rectangle Pro, that might be a viable solution in the mean time.
Many thanks.
By default app layouts will be saved with absolute sizing & positioning. It sounds like you want relative positioning, and at the moment I don't have a great way to translate the two, so you'd have to manually change your window dimensions to values less than one (fraction or decimal) with a docking position and display. It's on my roadmap to make a simple way to switch between the two or allow saving in relative sizing and positioning.
Hi @rxhanson, I’ve been using Rectangle Pro for a while now and I’m really happy with it. I use it a lot with the Multitouch app.
I have a question for you. Is it possible to add a feature to Rectangle Pro that automatically locates a new application window in the preset layout? For example, if I have Safari at 93% when I launch a new window, the same layout, location, and size should apply.
I know there’s an app called LayAuto (https://layautoapp.com) that does something similar, but it has some issues with certain applications and the developer isn’t supporting it anymore.
I’d really appreciate it if you could look into this. Thanks a bunch!
