Clicking on a notification causes error

When a user clicks an unread notification, the response (when updating the notification) is a 500: https://gist.github.com/codemonium/51bd5a7c48bda71e146aace901f55d05

It is possible to reproduce this error on commit https://github.com/rubyforgood/Flaredown/commit/867c984ed8472ab4e10bad966e0d3d80bb418b40, even before any changes to the notifications functionality.
