for some reason when cw[c] is equal to 0 (when you find a character with an
accent),l is reseting to 0 as well.

so i added a temporary variable called cwi to store the value of cw[c] and
then add this value to l.

here is the correction :
        ...
        var cwi:int = cw[c];
    l+=cwi;
    if(l>wmax){
        ...
        }
