compton zaps desktop image on 64bit OS

I use compton to get the windows transparency working in Sonic Pi 3.2.2. works fin on 32bit but on 64bit although the transparency works, it also zaps the desktop image replacing it with a uniform grey. Image returns when compton is quit. Problem is compoton, as window greys just by running compton without sonic-pi.
