m5 instance type not supported

Expected behavior

any instance type available in a given region should be supported. or at least the instance types should be listed, errors presented earlier, or something.

Actual behavior

a new env was created with instance type m5.large. the env was create successfully, but updates to that env failed reporting

...is using unknown instance type 'm5.large'
