Follow LOCALE conventions or implement option to display ascii only.

Check-mark and wifi-signal UTF characters do not display in a tty (or in a terminal emulator lacking font support).

Many terminal apps make correct use the environment variable LOCALE for this (LOCALE=C disables non-ascii characters). Some terminal apps also offer a --ascii (or similar named) option to display only ascii text.
