No way to use SVGs as Custom Marker Icon

There is currently no way to use SVGs as a Custom Marker Icon.

Issue 1885 seems to show that it is possible to do so if you work around some pitfalls. I'm new to the leaflet ecosystem, so is there some reason why the approach I propose these is ill advised for simpler maps? (Yes, scaling it to hundreds or thousands of copies of complex icons might raise some issues.)
