Update version number to prepare for 1.8.0 release

On a more serious note: close to 100 commits have gone into the project since the last release. That is all a lot easier to consume if they are made part of a release.

What is the least-effort type of 'release' that we can have - and how can I help? It would be great to unlock a bit of the potential that is now lurking in the shadows...
