[Extension/Formatting]: Why does formatting have to add new columns?

Problem

Format on save is great for whitespace correction but it's annoying when it adds new columns to "fix" an invalid schema when I'm in progress on editing it. A formatting tool should at least give you the option to not change runtime behavior especially when it's not accurate most of the time.

Suggested solution

Some flag in the cli command or setting in the extension that allows disabling runtime effects when formatting. A "simpler" formatting behavior you could say.

Alternatives

Not using auto-formatting, or waiting until you finish resolving issues before saving to format.
