TTS doesn't speak; add-on highlights paragraphs and quickly scrolls

First, thank you for creating this add-on. It's easily my most-used add-on. I have been using the add-on for a few years and I lean heavily on the TTS functionality.

After a recent OS re-install and restore of my home directory where Firefox was not able to read my profile I created a new profile and installed the add-on into that new profile. In the new profile I have a button to run the TTS however the paragraphs are quickly highlighted and scrolled without any voice activity.

I have verified Firefox is able to do audio via some test links on YouTube. Looking at the add-on configs, I don't see any obvious lack of permissions. Also, I don't see anyone else with a similar problem in the Issues here in the repo.

This is Firefox on Debian 12.

Any thoughts? Advice on how to debug?
