ObservationUnit with multiple crops

Open cpommier opened this issue 6 years ago • 4 comments

There are situation where you can have multiple crops per observationUnits. See related discussions in MIAPPE https://github.com/MIAPPE/MIAPPE/issues/4 For instance, you could study the interaction between advantices and crops or the competition / collaboration between two crops. You could also study how a germplasm mix perform for a single crop. You could also study crop rotations for multiyear studies.

There are several approaches that could be considered:

  • observationUnit with several germplasms, with a type for the germplasm within the observationUnit to discrimante for instance the main culture and the co culture.
  • several related observationUnit.

This would be useful for many woody perennial species as well. For grafted species, observation units are a combination of two unique germplasm records, one for rootstock and one for scion. A good way of handling grafted plants is probably needed for full BrAPI functionality in these species.

@tyrwh For graphed plants we took a different approach with Kiwifruit. Although in that case there was only one crop. The observation unit was a grafted plant. The observation unit linked to a InventoryLot (new name for SeedLot, see https://github.com/plantbreeding/BrAPI/issues/545). This Inventory lot had two germplasm, one for the root stock and the other for the scion. There is some discussion on grafted plants in other issues e.g. https://github.com/plantbreeding/BrAPI/issues/545
