Add additional tests for the `core` module

This PR adds additional tests and fixes some minor formatting and typing issues as well as some bugs that have been encountered while writing the tests.

The comments mark the tests that are still failing. Most of them are because the intended behaviour is unclear to me. @IngoScholtes maybe you can help clarify them.
