Official signed stats about used Linux distributive

Open abitrolly opened this issue 7 years ago • 8 comments

Now that e-Residence software is ported to Fedora, I'm highly interested to know the stats - how many active users are there, how many active Linux users are there, and how many are using Fedora for better e-Residency protection / experience.

I am interested in building sustainability schemes for digital infrastructure, so that's why it is important for me.

Open-EID software support for "Fedora" is an open community project i.e is not developed nor officially supported by developer(Estonian Information System Authority).

Due to that statistics for Fedora are not available. Usage of all Linux distribution is very low(<1% of total usage)

@markus-kullerkup usage for Linux is low, because we didn't even started marketing. :D More serious reason is that Linux users are more skilled in crypto, which kind of makes this software obsolete (if not used as a universal hardware wallet).

@Germano0 @metsma can you clarify if Open-EID software reports Linux as User-agent or other way when communication with servers, and if makes Ubuntu and Fedora a distinct values? Because I remember I've seen it somewhere.

It uses lsb_release https://github.com/open-eid/qt-common/blob/master/Common.cpp#L114-L120

metsma avatar Aug 13 '18 10:08 metsma

@metsma my Fedora doesn't come with lsb_release preinstalled, but..

# cat /etc/os-release
NAME=Fedora
VERSION="28 (Workstation Edition)"
ID=fedora
VERSION_ID=28
PLATFORM_ID="platform:f28"
PRETTY_NAME="Fedora 28 (Workstation Edition)"
ANSI_COLOR="0;34"
CPE_NAME="cpe:/o:fedoraproject:fedora:28"
HOME_URL="https://fedoraproject.org/"
SUPPORT_URL="https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Communicating_and_getting_help"

...

And Ubuntu.

# cat /etc/os-release

UBUNTU_CODENAME=xenial

So PRETTY_NAME should cut it.

Anyway, can we get current stats similar to https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/ ? I am biased, but it is super useful for community even if it is every 1 out of 100.

Please apologize me, but I don't have the time to check about this

@Germano0 no problem. Thanks again for pushing Fedora support so far. :)

abitrolly avatar Aug 13 '18 14:08 abitrolly

I am here again to ask for stats about used operating systems for e-Residency - no stats right now https://app.cyfe.com/dashboards/195223/5587fe4e52036102283711615553

Can, please, you take a look, what is the ratio of Linux distributions among e-Residents and what is the ration of Fedora or unidentified distributions among them? At least on my F28 lsb_release is not installed by default, and I don't know what is being reported in this case.

@markus-kullerkup so how many Linux workstations this year? :)
