Translation of the "How to Contribute to Numpy" comic
Hi all, this is a tracking isuse on translating the "How to Contribute to Numpy" comic.
These comics aim to show newcomers that NumPy is driven by people who use it: in this case, scientists! These comics will show grad students finding a usability problem in NumPy, working together to submit an issue, and talking to community members.
Here's a link to the comic.
This is following similar efforts to translate the NumPy documentation at #55
Timeline
I will be able to help with translation after December, since I am finishing up the comic before then.
Languages
- We'll probably start with a Portuguese translation.
- @joao-antonio-gg expressed interest in translating the comics to Portuguese in a previous issue about the comics
- I welcome other languages as well! Just comment here with your interest and language.
Process
- Translate the English script into the target language (note: this is not the final script but close to final)
- Review the translation
- Update the text in a graphics editor (such as GIMP, Inkscape or Krita)
- Review the typesetting (does the translated text fit in the speech bubbles?)
- Release translated comic
Items:
- Comic script in English
- Comic pages with blank speech bubbles
- Comic script in target language
- Comic pages with target language
Hello! Sorry for the delay, but I just translated and reviewed the script. Can I send a PR for it?
@Joao-antonio-gg No worries on the delay! Thank you for making the translation!
For sharing the Portuguese script, you could either:
- share it in this Github thread
- make a PR of the script as a Markdown file in the comic repo here, into the
translationfolder: https://github.com/MarsBarLee/gsod-numpy-2023
The next steps are to:
- review the Portuguese script.
- typeset the Portuguese script into the comic pages. This could be done in a graphics editor (such as GIMP, Inkscape or Krita). I am also considering writing a .PO file to programmatically manipulate and update the graphic editor so that the typesetting process is less manual.
Hi, I’d like to contribute to the translation of the comic into French, as I am French myself. Thank you!
Hi @MarsBarLee ,
I noticed that this issue has been addressed in the following Pull Request made by @Joao-antonio-gg
I'm a relatively new contributor to Numpy and understanding these repos and issues. Could you please confirm if that PR indeed addresses the issue you reported, or there are more things to be added?
Regards
Musharaf Aijaz
Hi, I’d like to contribute to the translation of the comic into French, as I am French myself. Thank you!
Hi @luluglm! Thank you for offering to translate! You can take a look at the English script and translate from there.
If you have any questions such as certain words or terms, feel free to ask me.
I can coordinate to find a reviewer to look at your French translation.
Hi @Musharraffaijaz. Are you interested in translating the comic into another language?
@Joao-antonio-gg did complete the Portuguese translation and we are now waiting for someone to review it.
