Description of the problem

I notice that Single executable applications are still described as under "Active Development". Is there any sense when this might progress to at least a release candidate?

I don't know who can answer the question, the single executable application initiative currently doesn't have a champion: https://github.com/nodejs/node/blob/HEAD/doc/contributing/strategic-initiatives.md

AFAICT there is still a pretty big TODO for virtual file system support in https://github.com/nodejs/single-executable/blob/main/docs/virtual-file-system-requirements.md and frequently requested in https://github.com/nodejs/single-executable/issues and https://github.com/nodejs/single-executable/discussions
