choppy audio/crackling

I have tried both countermeasures by editing files and restarting pulse. no good. sound is good for a while then it would skip. different intervals, 6 to 25 seconds so no buffer related. any ideas?

That's very bizarre, is your CPU up to the task? Have you just woken from suspend? I often end up restarting viper after resuming from suspend due to audio chopping, presumably from a severely backlogged buffer.
