comment from @iantaylor-NOAA on 2019-03-14: Is this the extra_se input for indices? If so, it would be good to retain the existing setup as an option rather than replace with Andre's suggestion for purposes of backwards compatibility and comparing the effect of the two approaches (I suspect it would be small).
