You could use MathJax or KaTeX for that purpose. Be sure to render the maths before md to avoid interference (as e.g. mentioned here).

Has there been any development on this yet? I think it'd benefit some people and not negatively influence the others.

I have commented on this issue in my first week of university. Since then I have graduated and started working full time. I hope future students will be able to profit from this feature. I will unsubscribe as I won't really have a use for this anymore 😅
