AutoUpload files skipped or upload not starting
⚠️ Before posting ⚠️
- [x] This is a bug, not a question or an enhancement.
- [x] I've searched for similar issues and didn't find a duplicate.
- [x] I've written a clear and descriptive title for this issue, not just "Bug" or "Crash".
- [x] I agree to follow Nextcloud's Code of Conduct.
Steps to reproduce
- Configure a folder for auto upload.
Expected behaviour
- Uploads should start automatically when connected to Wi-Fi, without long delays.
Actual behaviour
- Auto-Upload randomly skips photos and videos without any visible pattern.
- Upload sometimes does not start at all, even when on the same Wi-Fi for hours.

Additional information
Sometimes it is working, sometimes it is not working.
I have the same issues. Around 30-50 % of my photos taken are skipped by AutoUpload. Very annoying.
Same, just trying to figure out Nextcloud for the first time and very frustrating because you tend to assume it's your fault for not configuring something right. Not clear how it works, doesn't show any status, just doesn't seem to work reliably. Syncs only some photos placed in the folder. This function needs to be rock solid because it can lead to precious memories or photo-notes lost. People rely on their auto upload, especially for photos. Without auto upload on Android and 2 way sync on Windows Next Cloud won't work well for us to manage our family photos.

Hi
We’re currently working on improving the auto upload feature, and we’d love your help testing a new QA version. You can download it [here] and share your experience with us.
We’re aware of the current limitations with auto upload and explained the details [in this issue]. Rest assured, we’re actively working on making it more reliable.
It would also be very helpful if you could share the related logs with us. To do this, open Settings → Logs and filter using the keywords “AutoUpload” and “Upload.” You can then upload your logs [at this link].
@alperozturk96 thanks! Installed the QA build and so far can't reproduce any issues. Be sure I'll keep you posted :D Also let me know if you want me to do anything specific to test.
BTW was too eager to install the QA build so uninstalled the Prod build before I realized I should've first got you the logs, oops!
@alperozturk96 filtering logs works but it doesn't look like there's any way to save them when filtered. When not filtered there's an option to send all logs by email.
After a while upload in the QA version became a bit lazy again. Still works but some delays and reports strange things like it uploaded files 3 hours ago but still shows as "Waiting to upload"

Hope you can make auto upload extremely robust so that no one has to doubt it. But in the meantime it would be handy if there was a button to sync that would do that in the foreground and then report how many files in local dir, how many new uploaded, how many existing skipped. I feel sorta paranoid that it will forget to upload some files, plus never know if it did the thing or not, etc

This QA version crashes my phone, soft reboot, when auto uploading, and viewing the screen of "uploads" .
Fold7 android 16.
@theomajigga Can you see the crash log?
@theomajigga @rsheptolut
Hello.
We’ve made several fixes to the auto-upload logic and would appreciate your feedback. You can download the updated QA version here:
@alperozturk96 sorry, life happened and couldn't test for a while. Is there an even newer build to test that I can download somewhere?
Hello
Auto-Upload logic completely redesigned. Could you please try with 3.35.0 RC2 and share your feedback with us?
@alperozturk96 thanks! installed and seems to work much more reliable and faster! will try to break it and will let you know if I manage to. Appreciate your work! 👍
Installed too, but it still isn't reliable. I took a series of 12 photos a few seconds apart, but only 11 were uploaded. Then I tried another series of 12, and that time only 7 were uploaded. No error messages in either case, no mention of the "forgotten" files in the upload queue view.
@rolandmas
Hello
To better understand the issue, could you clarify whether you checked the upload immediately after taking photos, or if you waited for some time (e.g., 30 minutes, 1 hour, 1.5 hours) but the upload still didn’t occur?
Could you please provide details about the configured auto-upload folder? It would be helpful to know whether the upload was set to Wi-Fi only, as well as the selected conflict-handling policy etc.
Additionally, could you share your Android device model, Android version and local storage path that you want to upload files from?
If it is okay for you, you can include relevant logs that you can export from the Settings → Logs
Certainly. This is a Samsung Galaxy A23 5G running Android 14. I have a handful of local storage paths (Camera, Screenshots, Textra), with everything to be uploaded into the same /Documents/InstantUpload directory. No restriction related to wi-fi or charging state, do not upload existing files, do not use subfolders, keep the original file, and overwrite the remote version if one already exists. I just did a new series of 12 pictures, all but the sixth one were uploaded. Here are the logs.
@rolandmas
Hello
I checked the logs and prepared a new QA APK.
You can download from here, or you can download from the PR via generated QR Code.
Thank you so much and looking forward to your feedback.
@alperozturk96 I installed that package and took two series of resp. 10 and 20 photos. In both cases, they were all promptly uploaded. I'll keep an eye on it, but it does look promising.
A few other batches of pictures later (including one with 30-odd photos), still no missing upload. Some seem to be delayed, but so far all pictures ended up being uploaded. High hopes :-) (The "uploads" page is still not reflecting the actual upload queue, past or present, but hey, whatever, if the actual upload works)
