Updated for Python 3 compatibility

Hey @mwielgoszewski , not sure if you're still maintaining this code based on the other PRs, but this is an update for the code to work with Python 3. If you don't want to maintain this any more Im happy to take over or fork to get a Python 3 compatible version into PyPI.
