Track down PORTIDE boot failure

On @fintelia's laptop, having PORTIDE enabled caused Ward to fail to boot.

I believe I experienced the same problem in some qemu setting combinations that involved CDROM drives being inserted without actually having CDs in them. It might be worth tracking this down at some point, because it sounds like it can cause boot failures on real hardware.
