MS download page for VSCode lacks clear spacing between x64 and arm64 download icon links

Open carehart opened this issue 7 months ago • 3 comments

There's an important (and easily solved) UI problem on the the VSCode download page: there are boxes/icons shown (as download links) which separate x64/arm64 variants under each listed OS (Windows, Linux, Mac).

The problem is that for the column for Windows installers, the x64/arm64 boxes/icons/links appear as just one box...which is of course INCORRECT, as they are indeed separate installers (for those who would realize this). If they don't, they could end up with an arm64 installer for an x64 machine, which will fail with "this program does not support the version of Windows your computer is running". That's not then an obvious problem to solve.

See below for screenshots of the error and the site. And to be clear, this happened in Edge, Firefox, and Chrome, whether on a low- or high-resolution monitor. It's almost certainly just some CSS issue. I tried by didn't readily find it.

BTW, I do realize that the link for "Windows" above them would give you the proper installer for your OS...but not everyone will notice that and may tend to click one of these links below that.

Indeed, I was helping someone today who was trying to install VSCode for the first time who had encountered this error, and in a zoom session I saw the issue--then confirmed it on my own, so I wanted to bring the issue to someone's attention.

And apologies if this may not be the right place to raise such a site, but on the page was a "report issues" link that pointed to this repo. Again, screenshots below.

BTW, it would be nice as well if whoever may fix this would also widen the table holding those phrases "user installer" and "system installer". Right now, the latter ends up on two lines...and since few common software downloads bother to offer those two choices, it only further muddies the water to have the words appear rather jumbled.

Again, these are simple things to fix...even if many may argue they're "not important" and "needless hand-holding".

Hi @carehart, great timing! We already have this issue logged on the private website repo and I'm currently working on a redesign of the downloads page all up so this shouldn't be an issue for too much longer :)

Great to hear, thanks.

@hawkticehurst - duplicate? ok to close?

Yep, duplicate for an issue already filed in the VS Code website (private) repo, so we can close this one.

P.S. @carehart I'm finally getting the chance to circle back to this after needing to drop it earlier in the summer. The redesign is about 90% implemented and should be shipped within the next week or by the end of the month at the absolute latest.

Thanks very much for the PS.
