Include list of lissing emoji
As noted on Ars Technica:
There are just a few Microsoft designs that it hasn't open sourced, including the paperclip that looks like Clippy (the character is apparently copyrighted). A couple of other emoji were excluded because Microsoft's versions exclude [sic] the Windows logo.
The README (or some other file) should include a list of what such emoji from the Emoji standard are missing,
At a minimum, this information from the announcement blog post should be noted somewhere:
I don’t want to sugarcoat, so let’s start with the bad news: Clippy isn’t included in the open source emoji set 😩. I know, and I’d personally love to but due to (legal speak, legal speak, legal speak), we can’t open-source trademarks. For the same reason, our country flags, video game, and technologist emoji also won’t be available.
@Arithmomaniac - no problem:
- All country flags & regional indicators - Microsoft doesn't use flags, as they can be a hard space to navigate politically.
- Paperclip - because it looks like Clippy, who is trademarked.
- Technologist - Our version has a laptop with a Windows logo. We're looking at updating so we can include.
- Video game - Our version looked a little too close to an Xbox controller. We're looking at updating so we can include.
- Any customizable variants. We're still working on a way to be able to customize and output these. This includes:
- Handshake
- Holding hands
- Kiss
- Couple
- Family
All country flags
@jasoncuster im curious, does that include the Regional Indicator emoji? I believe windows just renders them as small capital letters whereas most other emoji sets use some sort of special formatting.
@jasoncuster thanks for the list and explanations; I hope it's added to source repo for visibility :-)
Is there a formal definition of a "customizable variant"? If not, what do you mean - those that support different skin tones?
@justsomederpystuff Yes, I've updated the list to include Regional Indicators. @Arithmomaniac - currently we don't have a way to automate output of customizable variants. Some are smaller amount of variants, but when it comes to families, its thousands of options, hence us needing a way to build out exporting smarts instead of throwing each variant up here. It's something we'll get to at some point though.
