How to solve a challenge?
I couldn't find the question in the documentation and I found it non-obvious. However, the documentation says:
Help is welcome! If you have suggestions for this documentation, or don’t understand how something works, please email us at [email protected] or open a new issue.
I found a OSM changeset linking to https://maproulette.org/browse/challenges/40175. I think I was on maproulette before and couldn't figure out how to solve a challenge, so I tried again.
- I click the above link.
- I click "Start"
- I wonder what MR tags are. Now that I write this issue, I think it might be "Map Roulette" tags? What does it mean to add them? Edit in iD. Sounds sensible. I click it. iD opens. I solve the issue in the tag editor.
What should I do now? Click here?
The original tab also changed:
- I try clicking on "I fixed it".
I should write a comment here, so is this the way to submit the change? Maybe not? Can MapRoulette communicate with my iD tab? I logged into MapRoulette after all? I ended up clicking the button in iD instead.
What's the dialog box in MapRoulette for? Can I also submit the changes there? Can I somehow edit in MapRoulette directly in a way that I didn't find? I also click the "Submit" button in MapRoulette.
I'm not sure if I did the correct things. Could a screen cast of a successful quest solve be added to the documentation?
Hi, sorry if the workflow is not clear.
When you edit in iD, you will need to commit the change as usual. Then you come back to MapRoulette and confirm that you completed the task. This tells other MapRoulette users that the work is done and the task will not be shown again. MapRoulette cannot "know" that the task is fixed without you confirming it.
MR Tags are tags that are internal to MapRoulette, and they are used in special cases, and usually the instructions will tell you to use them. You can ignore them if not. It lets the creator of the challenge group and filter the tasks users complete in custom ways.
Let us know if you still have questions.
Thanks for the answer!
If this confusion doesn't just apply to me, you could consider adding something to the documentation:
Could a screen cast of a successful quest solve be added to the documentation?
Just to add one data point, as someone who is also a relatively new user, I also found the "MR tags" thing confusing. If you're using MapRoulette for the first time, it's not even obvious that "MR" means "MapRoulette". As an experienced OSM editor, when I read about adding tags, my mind jumps to OSM tags :-)
MR tags don't seem to be documented on maproulette.org, and the only place that actually explains what they are is this diary entry, so I would encourage you to improve this part of the UI and documentation.
Okay folks you have convinced me that a quick screen cast is in order!
To be clear, I know how to solve a challenge, I just have some suggestions on how you can improve the UI to make it more self-explanatory, so it becomes clearer to a first time user how to do it (without them having to watch a tutorial video or go to the Github issue tracker to find out what MR tags are) :-)
They are documented: https://learn.maproulette.org/documentation/using-maproulette-tags/#content
Would it be better to update the navigation button and title of the page to "MR Tags" instead of "Maproulette Tags" to make it easier to find, and to just clarify in the description that MR means maproulette?

Yes, that would probably make it easier to find. Perhaps a mouse-over hint at the place where "MR Tags" appears would also be good.
