I get an anonymous user when using the API for /self

Hey I have completed this tutorial in python and php and every time I do it I get an anonymous user back as a result. It has the user ID of 1 and I'm not sure if that means I am connecting and getting data back but the wrong token or if I am having a isolated API issue.
