From a private conversation with @valleyofdawn regarding the water-well icon concept:

"This is an international symbol for wells (when in blue) used in British OS maps and Israeli government maps, among others. Nowadays wells are more points of interest than sources of drinking water and I think warrant an icon of their own. The suggested icons can be good if simplified to be legible at 11/15 pixels, which would be hard. In the middle east there is no roof over them."
