vidir: on mac, always thinks "vi exited nonzero, aborting"

I've been trying to use vidir, but it fails on the Mac with

vi exited nonzero, aborting

no matter how I exit vi. I've tried using vi itself and exiting then echoing the exit code, and it exits with 0.

I've also tried running it like so:

EDITOR=/usr/bin/vi vidir ~/bin

with no luck. I normally have vi aliased to vi: aliased to vim -O -n, but tried without the alias to no avail.
